The United Nation Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) concluded its mandate on 9 July 2011, coinciding with South Sudan’s independence, transitioning to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to support the new nation’s stability and development.

UNMIS SRSG expresses condolences on the death of the Sudanese novelist, Al-Tayeb Saleh

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Sudan, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, today
expressed his deep sorrow over the death of Sudan's foremost novelist Al-Tayeb Saleh.
Mr. Saleh will be always remembered in Sudan and elsewhere around the world as an outstanding
writer whose fiction explored various ways of how different cultures, generations and peoples can
coexist peacefully, Qazi said.
On behalf of UNMIS, Mr Qazi expresses his condolences to the bereaved family and offers his
sincere sympathy to the people of Sudan and to Mr. Saleh's friends and admirers around the world.
